Inna Heilman Collage
2015 South Ponte Vedra 1972-1988
………………..Please join me and look at what happened from my perspective:
In 1972 I was one of the 26 who founded the SPVA. Here I am 43 yrs. later, the only survivor at age 95+ standing in front of all of you, the members of what is now called the SPVCA. What a success story! It doesn’t get any better than that!
It was Sue Olsen who put me in my latest role last January when she dumped over 100 photos taken from 1972 to 1988 on my lap saying: “Please do something with them. You are the only one who knows.” Fortunately, photography is “my thing” now. I have the whole set-up including “Photoshop” which was essential to rescue most of the pictures.
When I started I had no idea where this whole project would lead me. Since most pictures had been taken at the many meetings and parties it all seemed almost frivolous. That bothered me because in reality we were like “pioneers” building a new community. That is a fact which should be passed on, a fact which was on my mind when I made my collages. I hope I succeeded by using the old photos and adding important happenings of the year under the headline “MEMORABLE EVENTS”. Let me add here one very important but invisible group: the members who monitored events around us by attending uncounted important and often probably very boring meetings.
Looking around here now I love that I see so many familiar faces together with all of you “newcomers” who joined after we moved to a retirement community 10 yrs. ago.
Here is a very quick trip back to the beginning especially for you:
In 1969 my husband Bert (3 time president) and I came to SPVB and counted 82 houses, all on the beach, with miles and miles of open land north to Ponte Vedra and south to Vilano Beach. St. Johns County was in it’s infancy and hardly anyone knew that SPVB existed. By 1972 the community had grown. Fires, burglaries and other problems stirred up Larry Picus and Dick Oldenburg. They set the stage for 26 of us to found the SPVA with the following goals: Police protection, Fire Protection, Protection of the Environment and Traffic control on the beach. Dick and Larry were two savvy guys who became our first presidential team. They immediately put South Ponte Vedra Beach on the official map by making contacts with the Sheriff, the County Commission, the Building Department, the Zoning Board and the barely existing Fire Department (no fire taxes were levied).
Our membership climbed rapidly and we went to work: With our own money we built our own fire station which in time became this beautiful building with all the special touches our members added: cabinets, tiles, trellises and more; we bought our first fire truck from Annapolis, MD for $2,500; we started our own
Volunteer Fire Department; we incubated 40,000 turtles in 10 yrs.; it took over 20 yrs. to get the cars off the beach; etc., etc.
Raise your hand if you live at Turtle Shores. How many of you know that a developer filed plans and applied for rezoning to build 10 three story high, high density buildings on top of the dune? At that news all hell broke lose at the SPVA and we went into a full fighting mode. Our efforts paid off, the plans were withdrawn. We not only won but as a bonus the “One-family houses” at maximum height of 35? were grandfathered in. And that opened the door to all of you who now live happily at Turtle Shores.
The very best part of this day today is how very much alive this association still is after almost half a century. It proves that we, the founder members, succeeded in establishing a center of gravity for this community. Without it many of you would not know each other.
I hope that my collages will help to keep this pioneer spirit and this very special history alive and I close with the title of my book written in 1991
South Ponte Vedra Beach Why it is a special place to live !
